Article verified for Release 14.1 on March 30, 2025.
This article explains how to use the question-and-answer randomization feature, both for manually created tests and for generated tests.
About randomization options
The following options are possible when creating a test:
- If the Question randomization option is enabled, each candidate will have a different order of questions.
- If the Answer randomization option is enabled, each candidate will have a different order of answers.
Note: It is possible to disable both options simultaneously, enable just one of these two options, or enable both.
Randomization in a manually created test
The following rules apply to a manually created test:
Question Randomization:
- Questions can be randomized for each candidate.
Answer Randomization:
- Answer order in Single Choice and Multiple Choice questions is randomized for each candidate.
- Ordering and Matching questions: The answers are always randomized.
- Essay, True/False, Matrix, Open-ended, and Hot Spot questions: All candidates’ answers remain the same
Randomization in a generated test
The following rules apply to the Generated test:
Question Randomization:
- Questions can be randomized for each candidate.
Answer Randomization:
- The answers to Ordering and Matching types of questions are always randomized.
- Answers with Essay, True/False, Matrix, Open-ended, and Hot Spot questions always have the same order.
- Multiple and Single-choice questions always have the same answer order by default.
Enabling Question randomization and Answer randomization in the Test wizard
Select the Tests tab in the left-side menu and select the New test tab.
In the fourth step of the test creation process, Add questions, and enable the option you want.
Note: If this option is enabled, the order of questions and answers to candidates with the same test version will also be different.
Enabling Question randomization and Answer randomization in Manage test
You are not limited to enabling question-and-answer randomization only during the test creation process. You can also enable randomization in tests that have already been published. To do so, follow these steps:
- from the tests section choose manage tests
- choose the desired test from the list
- Go to the Questions tab where you can turn on Randomize question order and answer order.
Enabling Question Randomization and Answer Randomization in Generated Tests
In generated tests, randomization for both questions and answers is automatically enabled. To change these options, follow these steps:
- After creating the test, navigate to the Questions tab.
- You have the option to disable either Question Randomization or Answer Randomization, or both if needed.
- You will also have the option to enable the Frequency Factor. When this option is checked, the system will consider the frequency factor of each question during the test generation process. The frequency factor determines how likely a question is to appear in the test.
NOTE: Question and answer randomization is not possible if the test is created with all questions on one page.
